As I said during the last execution - if they actually wanted these inmates to die as quickly as possible they wouldn't use the heart as the aiming point - they'd use the brain instead.
Especially since they're using ballistic tipped 308 projectiles at near point blank range - 3 of those to the brain box will turn the lights out...
That said, in SC if you're getting shot by a firing squad it's because you chose it amongst the various options for capital punishment so the inmates knew the risk.
