Anyone who's served in the military knows that every mission has "mission critical" equipment/assets/decision points/etc...
In the planning cycle they're identified and redundancies are built into the plan as no plan survives first contact. This is a very basic planning function; every E5 and above in the military is expected to understand/identify/plan these sorts of things.
I'd recommend th eSecret Service adopt this type of planning methodology. I'm sure there are plenty of veterans in the organization that can help implement it.
There's just no excuse for "technical difficulties" (which happen) to cause this type of security gap in an operation. The only way I can see that happening is they had a single point of failure without built in redundancies...
